Albanien ist ein Land im Wandel. Im Spannungsfeld zwischen alten Strukturen und neuen Möglichkeiten versucht das Land, sich neu zu erfinden. Wie bei jedem Wandel gibt es Konflikte um Status, Ressourcen und Macht. Das System feiert die Gewinner und lässt die Gestrigen hinter sich.
Elisa Berdica kehrt regelmäßig in ihr Heimatland Albanien zurück, um die spezifischen sozialen Herausforderungen zu dokumentieren, mit denen das Land in den letzten Jahren konfrontiert ist. Das Projekt RURALB konzentriert sich auf das ländliche Leben in den nördlichen Bergen und an der südlichen Küste. Während Modernisierung und Urbanisierung rasend voranschreiten, sehen sich die ländlichen Communities mit Problemen wie dem raschen Wachstum des Massentourismus, der Abwanderung der jungen Generation, sozialer Ablehnung und Armut konfrontiert. Gleichzeitig will das Projekt die albanische Kultur und Traditionen sichtbar machen und zu ihrer Erhaltung beitragen.
Elisa Berdica wurde in Shkoder, Albanien, geboren. Seit ihrer Promotion in Klinischer Psychologie arbeitet sie als Dozentin an der Universität Mannheim und als Mental Health Consultant. In den letzten zehn Jahren hat sie ihre Leidenschaft für das fotografische Medium weiterentwickelt und sich dabei auf dokumentarische Projekte konzentriert. Neben RURALB arbeitet sie derzeit an einer Serie über die LGBTQIA+ Community in Albanien, bei der sie ihren psychologischen Background mit ihrer Leidenschaft für visuelles Storytelling verbindet.

Albania is a country in transformation. In the field of tension between old structures and new opportunities, the country is trying to reinvent itself. As in every transition, there are conflicts over status, resources, and power. The system celebrates winners and neglects those left behind. Elisa Berdica regularly returns to her home country to capture specific social challenges that the country is facing in recent years. The RURALB project focuses on rural life, mostly in the northern mountains and the southern coast. As modernization and urbanization progresses rapidly, rural communities are faced with issues as the rapid growth of mass tourism, the exodus of the younger generation, social rejection, and poverty. Concurrently, the project seeks to highlight and contribute to the preservation of Albanian culture and traditions.
Elisa Berdica was born in Shkoder, Albania. After completing her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology, she has been working as a lecturer at the University of Mannheim and as a mental health consultant. The last decade she has been developing her passion for the photographic medium focusing on documentary projects. Alongside RURALB she is currently working on a series about the LGBTQIA+ community in Albania, seamlessly merging her background in psychology with her passion for visual storytelling.

Der Film folgt Salgado auf seinen Reisen durch verschiedene Teile der Welt und zeigt dabei seine eindringlichen Fotografien, die oft soziale Ungerechtigkeiten und Umweltzerstörung dokumentieren. Durch Interviews mit Salgado selbst bietet der Film tiefe Einblicke in das Innenleben des Künstlers. Dabei wird nicht nur Salgados einzigartige Vision gewürdigt, sondern auch seine humanitäre Mission, die durch seine Arbeit manifestiert wird. "Das Salz der Erde" ist eine inspirierende und visuell beeindruckende Hommage an einen der bedeutendsten Fotografen unserer Zeit.

"The Salt of the Earth" explores the life and work of Brazilian photographer Sebastião Salgado. The film follows Salgado on his travels through different parts of the world, showing his haunting photographs that often document social injustice and environmental destruction. Through interviews with Salgado himself, the film offers deep insights into the artist's inner life. It not only honors Salgado's unique vision, but also his humanitarian mission, which is manifested through his work. "The Salt of the Earth" is an inspiring and visually stunning tribute to one of the most important photographers of our time.

What are the odds? Wer die Straßen dieser Welt betritt, begibt sich in einen überwältigenden Strom der Sinneseindrücke. Bewusst wahrzunehmen, was wir sehen, hören und erleben, ist ein kreativer Prozess - die Suche nach Sinn und Unsinn. Straßenfotografie ist der Versuch, offen zu sein für all das, was um uns herum existiert und passiert. Bedeutung zu entdecken in den Zufälligkeiten des Alltags.
“THE ODD” ist eine Sammlung solcher Momente, des Ungewöhnlichen im Gewohnten. Eine Verbeugung vor dem öffentlichen Leben als Gelegenheit, sich mit den Spuren unserer Mitmenschen zu verbinden. Und über die rätselhafte Fülle des Lebens zu staunen, das wir mit ihnen teilen.
Donni Schoenemond ist Filmemacher, Musiker und Künstler. Er lebt in Mannheim, Deutschland. Seit beinahe zwei Jahrzehnten tourt er durch Sets, Clubs und Bühnen rund um den Globus, stets damit beschäftigt, sein kreatives Schaffensfeld zu erweitern. Die Straßenfotografie erschließt ihm den öffentlichen Raum als Abeitsumgebung. Sein künstlerischer Fokus ist so unscharf wie die Welt für Neugeborene. So kann er Brücken schlagen zwischen Gewerken und Menschen, immer auf der Suche nach neuen Verbindungen. Seine Leidenschaft sind Abwege und Außenseiten.

What are the odds? Roaming the streets of our world means immersing oneself in a staggering whirlwind of sensory stimulation. To truly grasp what we see, hear, witness, and experience is an inherently creative process. Street photography seeks to fully embrace the conscious perception of our surroundings and uncover significance in the arbitrary of everyday life.
"THE ODD" stands as a collection of the peculiar in the mundane, celebrating public life as an opportunity to connect with the traces of our fellow humans. And to revel in the abundance of a life spent among them.
Donni Schoenemond is a filmmaker, musician and artist based in Mannheim, Germany. He has toured clubs, sets and stages around the globe for almost two decades while persistently extending his fields of work. Street photography opens up public space as a working environment for him. His artistic focus is as blurry as the world is to a newborn, dissolving the lines between crafts and longing for connection through expression. Mostly taking the long way round.

Der Kaukasus kommt nicht zur Ruhe. Nach dem Zusammenbruch der Sowjetunion im Jahr 1991 erlangten die Teilrepubliken Armenien, Aserbaidschan und Georgien ihre Unabhängigkeit. Ohne die russische Imperialmacht brachen Konflikte aus, die jahrzehntelang unterdrückt wurden. Nach einer Phase relativer Stabilität sehen sich die Länder des Südkaukasus erneut mit radikalen Umwälzungen konfrontiert: Georgien nahm 2022 ca. 30.000 ukrainische Kriegsgeflüchtete und über 100.000 Exilrussen auf, die der militärischen Mobilisierung und der politischen Verfolgung in Russland entkommen wollten.
Aserbaidschan, das über die letzten Jahre zu großem Gas-Reichtum gelangt und sein Militär massiv aufgerüstet hatte, eroberte zunächst 2020 große Gebiete um Bergkarabach zurück. Der Angriff auf diese Region im September 2023 führte schließlich zum erzwungenen Exodus der rund 100.000 Bewohner Richtung Armenien.
Fotograf Arthur Bauer und Journalistin Ira Peter begaben sich 2022 und 2023 in diese spannungsreiche Region, um ein unmittelbares Verständnis des kaukasischen Mosaiks zu bekommen. Sie sprachen mit Menschen und sammelten Geschichten. Sie trafen auf Nationalismus und Kriegskult, auf postsowjetisches Erbe und Generationenkonflikte, auf Friedensaktivismus und soziales Engagement.
Für ihre journalistische Arbeit wurden Bauer und Peter mit dem Recherchepreis Osteuropa 2023 ausgezeichnet.

The Caucasus does not find peace. After the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, the republics of Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia gained their independence. Without the Russian imperial power, conflicts broke out that had been suppressed for decades. After a period of relative stability, the countries of the South Caucasus are once again facing radical upheavals: Georgia took in about 30,000 Ukrainian war refugees in 2022 and over 100,000 exiled Russians seeking to escape military mobilization and political persecution in Russia.
Azerbaijan, which had accumulated great gas wealth over the past few years and had massively upgraded its military, initially recaptured large areas around Nagorno-Karabakh in 2020. The attack on this region in September 2023 finally led to the forced exodus of the approx. 100,000 inhabitants in the direction of Armenia.
Photographer Arthur Bauer and journalist Ira Peter went to this tension-filled region in 2022 and 2023 to get a firsthand understanding of the Caucasian mosaic. They talked to people and collected stories. They encountered nationalism and the cult of war, post-Soviet heritage and generational conflict, peace activism and social engagement.
For their journalistic work, Bauer and Peter were awarded the Research Prize Eastern Europe 2023.

“In ihrer persönlichen Arbeit verwebt Anne Ackermann Kindheitserinnerungen an den Tod ihres Vaters mit meditativen Passagen aus seinem Tagebuch. Wiederentdeckte Familienfotos fügt sie mit ihren eigenen kraftvollen Bildern vom Leben, wie es weitergeht, zusammen.
Die Fotoarbeit ist Zeugnis dafür, was von Eltern an ihre Kinder weitergegeben wird – Trauer, aber auch Liebe, Kreativität und die Wertschätzung einfacher Freuden wie Fotografie und Gartenarbeit. Das intime Verständnis ihres Vaters für die natürlichen Muster von Leben, Tod und Erneuerung durchdringt auch Ackermanns Fotografien. Anne Ackermann arbeitet weltweit als Portrait- und Reportagefotografin für Kunden wie Die Zeit, Geo und The New Yorker. Sie ist mehrfache Stipendiatin der VG Bild Kunst, Finalistin beim International Women Photographers Award (IWPA) und Gewinnerin des Lagois Fotopreises. Im Juni 2022 erschien ihr erstes Fotobuch „This life is a mix of poison and honey“ im KEHRER Verlag.

“In her very personal work, Anne Ackermann weaves together childhood memories of her father’s passing with meditative passages from his diary, rediscovered family photographs, and her own potent images of life as it continues on.
The series is a testament to what is imparted from parent to child – grief, certainly, but also affection, creativity, and an appreciation of simple pleasures, like picture-taking and gardening. Her father’s intimate understanding of the natural patterns of life, death, and renewal also permeates Ackermann’s photographs, much like an heirloom plant passed down through the generations that continues to yield fruit.”
Anne Ackermann works worldwide as a portrait and reportage photographer for clients such as Die Zeit, Geo, and The New Yorker. She is a multiple grantee of VG Bild-Kunst, a finalist at the International Women Photographers Award (IWPA), and winner of the Martin Lagois Photo Prize. In June 2022 her first photo book „This life is a mix of poison and honey“ was published by KEHRER Verlag.

Diane Arbus gained recognition in the 1950s and 60s for her unusual portraits of people who were on the margins of society, including transgender people, circus performers, and immigrants. Arbus's photographs continue to offer a rare and haunting view of humanity. Her images were provocative and challenged conventional notions of normalcy. Arbus was an artist who knew how to create a mysterious atmosphere and recognize the beauty in the seemingly absurd and strange.
We provide a multi-medial introduction to the life and work of this extraordinary photographer. In addition to her photographic art, we share the perspective of people who played an important role in her life, including her daughter Doon Arbus, her mentor Lisette Model or the writer Susan Sontag.

One of the photography books that is particularly close to our hearts is "An Aperture Monograph" by Diane Arbus. The book, published shortly after her death, is considered a timeless masterpiece. It sparked various controversies and had a great influence on the development of photography as an art form.

Impressionen vom Portrait-Workshop mit Foto-Enthusiastinnen aus der ukrainischen Community. Nach einer Einführung in unterschiedliche Stile & Formen der Portrait-Fotografie hatten die Teilnehmerinnen Gelegenheit, das gelernte Wissen in praktischen Übungen anzuwenden. Mit kleinen Tricks, wie z.B. die Verwendung eines Reflektors, lassen sich beeindruckende Effekte erzielen und die Skills auf eine neue Ebene heben.

Impressions of the portrait workshop with photo enthusiasts from the Ukrainian community. After an introduction to different styles & forms of portrait photography, the participants had the opportunity to apply the learned knowledge in practical exercises. With small tricks, such as the use of a reflector, impressive effects can be achieved and skills raised to a new level.

Der erste Film, den wir euch im LANGER zeigen wollen, dreht sich um eine der wichtigsten Fotografinnen der USA: Vivian Maier. Doch zu Lebzeiten hat diese geheimnisvolle Künstlerin nie ein Bild veröffentlicht. Erst als Kurator John Maloof 2007 zufällig einen Karton mit Negativen aus den 50er und 60er Jahren ersteigerte, kam diese unglaubliche Geschichte an das Tageslicht. Der hochspannende Film macht sich auf die Spurensuche nach einem der größten Rätsel der Fotografie.

The first film we want to show you at LANGER centers around one of the most important female photographers in the USA: Vivian Maier. Yet during her lifetime, this mysterious artist never published a picture. It was only when curator John Maloof auctioned off a box of negatives from the 50s and 60s in 2007 that this incredible story came to light. This highly exciting film explores one of the greatest mysteries of photography.
